Teenager's sword attack on father

Police tape - Freefoto A teenager has admitted killing his father with two Samurai swords.

When 17-year-old Daniel Leather's mother came home, she was confronted by him and told that Satan ordered him to kill his father John.

Leather, from Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, was originally charged with murdering his father in November.

But he pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility and sentence was deferred.

The High Court in Glasgow heard how a shocked Margaret Leather, 48, was grabbed round the neck and thrown to the ground by her son.

He then told her: "I've stabbed dad seven times."

" He told me to take the dogs out. I just went crazy. It's all a blur

Schoolteacher John Leather, 49, was stabbed in his lungs, liver, pancreas and stomach.

Prosecutor Andrew Lamb said: "Any one of these injuries could have caused death."

Mr Leather had initially disarmed his son when he attacked him with one of the swords but he went back into his bedroom and returned with a larger weapon and attacked him again.

Leather, of Whistlefield, in Elliock, was originally charged with murdering his father on 14 November.

However, he pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of culpable homicide on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The court heard that he was suffering from a depressive mental illness at the time.

He also admitted attacking and abducting his mother and forcing her to go with him to withdraw £200 from a cash machine.

The court was told that Leather had been the victim of bullying at school after his family moved to Scotland from England and his behaviour began to change.

He would barricade himself into his room with a chair and had started giving his family Nazi salutes.

Leather joined the army but was discharged after a month when he became homesick and threatened to kill himself.

On the day of the attack, Leather alleged that his father was telling him to do chores in the house.

Plea for help

He told police: "He told me to take the dogs out. I just went crazy. It's all a blur."

Leather killed his father at lunchtime and his mother made the discovery when she got home at 1640 GMT.

The court heard that after assaulting his mother he calmed down for a while. He put the kettle on and his mother had a glass of brandy.

He then told his mother that he needed money to get out of the country.

Mr Lamb said Mrs Leather managed to mouth a plea for help when she was in a shop with her son and the police were called.

Donald Findlay, QC, who defended Leather, said two psychiatrists found that he showed classic symptoms of depressive illness, including a belief that his parents hated him.

Mr Lamb said doctors agreed that Leather would not benefit from hospital treatment and prison discipline had helped him.

Temporary judge Colin MacAuley,QC, called for a background report and deferred sentence until May.
