Minister warns of holiday risks

British tourist in Ibiza, Spain

British holidaymakers on the Greek island of Corfu are being visited by a UK minister who will warn them about the dangers of behaving badly abroad.

Foreign Office Minister Chris Bryant will tell tourists and travel companies about the risks of falling foul of the law or becoming victims of crime.

He said many Britons go "go a little bit wild" on holiday but he wanted to ensure they "have a safe one".

Mr Bryant added: "We want to make sure that people have a great holiday".

Victims of crime

The minister, MP for Rhondda, said millions of Britons travel to Greece each year - many of whom were young people who were going abroad without their parents for the first time.

He said it was important that holidaymakers "know their limit" and get properly insured before setting off.

"Quite often Brits get into trouble with the law, but sometimes they're the victims of crime as well because they've had so much to drink that they don't know where they end up at the end of the night," he told the BBC.

"There are girls who have, unfortunately, been raped, there have been sexual assaults.

"And quite often people get on the wrong side of the law when it comes to things like whether you're wearing a helmet on a moped, and whether you've been drinking or driving."
