Birmingham Labour MP in hospital

Khalid Mahmood

Labour MP Khalid Mahmood is in hospital with kidney problems and has undergone emergency dialysis, his office has confirmed.

His aides say his illness took him by surprise, but that he is making a good recovery and is expected to be discharged in the next couple of days.

The 47-year-old, who is the Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, had a heart bypass 10 years ago.

He became an MP in 2001 and has served as a junior Home Office minister.

A spokesman for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham said: "Khalid Mahmood has been admitted to the QE Hospital. It was for a non-life threatening condition and he is improving satisfactorily."
