Government complaints body urged

Gordon Brown Steps should be taken to make it easier for the public to complain about government bodies, the Commons Public Administration Committee has said.

It has recommended the creation of a "one-stop shop" for complaints about public services.

The committee said the poor standard of complaint-handling at present may represent a "systemic problem".

Its chairman, Dr Tony Wright, said those who complain "want their concerns taken seriously and matters put right".

"People also need to be given the necessary help and support to make their complaint in the first place," he said.

Dr Wright said government bodies should use the feedback they receive from complaints to improve public services.

He said: "It is extraordinary that there are departments and agencies that seem not to be monitoring or learning from the complaints they receive."

The committee suggested the new complaints body - to be called Public Services Direct - could provide a single point of contact for impartial information on where to make a complaint.

It said such an organisation would aid people unsure of how or where to lodge an initial complaint and provide guidance on how to pursue it.
