Schwarzenegger disappoints Tories

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger California governor and former movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger has pulled out of appearing in person at the Tory Party conference.

The Republican politician was to make a keynote address on climate change at the conference later this month.

He will now speak via a live video link because political commitments meant he was unable to travel to the UK.

Mr Schwarzenegger made California the first US state to impose a mandatory cap on "greenhouse gas" emissions.

He was scheduled to give the speech on 30 September, the opening day of the conference.

'He'll be back'

He will not now give a full speech and his appearance has been shortened.

Mr Schwarzenegger said: "David Cameron is an outstanding leader and I was very disappointed in not being able to attend the Conservative Party conference.

"I look forward to participating in the conference live via satellite and will continue to work with David on combating climate change. Additionally, I have postponed my trade mission to India."

A Tory Party spokesman said: "It's a shame that Governor Schwarzenegger will not be attending conference in person.

"We're delighted though that he will be addressing delegates live and he wants to assure party members that he'll be back."

Mr Cameron has praised Mr Schwarzenegger for reviving the Republicans in California.

Before politics, the governor starred in films like Commando and Terminator, coining catchphrases such as "I'll be back".
