Controls on five terror suspects

Charles Clarke Five new control orders have been imposed on terror suspects, restricting their movement.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke revealed in a written statement to MPs that four of the orders were made on 23 November and one last Thursday.

Mr Clarke said the orders - the details of which have not been revealed - were approved by a High Court judge.

The controversial orders were brought in in March to replace detention without charge after a court ruling.

The identities of the five subjects of the orders have not been revealed.

The total number of control orders in force is now eight.

It is Home Office policy not to comment on what conditions individual suspects are subject to, but they can include house arrest.

The home secretary said he had refused two applications to have control orders modified over the last three months.

In addition to those covered by control orders, a number of other terror suspects are being held in custody pending deportation to countries that have agreed not to persecute them.
