Dr Liam Fox

Conservative MP
Woodspring

Date of birth

22 September 1961

Political profile

Having served as Shadow Health Secretary to two Conservative Leaders, Liam Fox received further promotion under Michael Howard's leadership. He was made Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party, working alongside Lord Saatchi.

After his election for the safe seat of Woodspring in 1992, Liam Fox enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks, becoming Parliamentary Private Secretary to Michael Howard, a whip and then a minister at the Foreign Office within a few years. He also backed Howard's short-lived bid for the leadership in 1997.

He is socially conservative in outlook, at one time even calling for a return of the flogging of criminals.

A charismatic and articulate debater and a thorough Eurosceptic, he is often described as a future Tory leader.

Away from Westminster, he was thanked on the sleeve notes to the debut album of his friend, ex-Neighbours actress turned pop star Natalie Imbruglia.
