Political profile
Joan Walley has left behind the strongly left-wing views which she maintained as a Lambeth councillor but she remains on the left of the New Labour leadership.
She was dropped after five years as an opposition transport spokesman shortly before Labour came to power and has occasionally rebelled against the government, over issues such as the restoration of a pensions link with earnings.
Her major political interest is linked with her membership of the Commons environmental audit select committee.
She is a strong campaigner for the development of a renewable energy strategy and against genetically-modified food.
Ms Walley has also encouraged the parliamentary authorities to improve their environmental strategy and implement a recycling regime.
She makes full use of parliamentary procedure in furthering her campaigns, with a raft of private bills and motions.
In 2001, she was herself the victim of a coup when a flood of new members denied her the expected chairmanship of the all-party football group in favour of Alan Keen.
