Steve Webb

Liberal Democrat MP
Northavon

Date of birth

18 July 1965

Political profile

One of the rush of unexpected Liberal Democrat victors in 1997, Steve Webb has made rapid progress to become one of his party's key spokesman.

He is the principal Lib Dem spokesman for work and pensions and is recognised as one of the Commons' leading authorities on the subject.

A former economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, he was appointed professor of social policy at Bath University shortly before his election and has published several books and pamphlets on social security.

He is a frequent speaker in the Commons chamber, and is fond of heavily detailed speeches which can sometimes challenge the uninitiated.

His interest in poverty alleviation is international and he is one of the leading voices of the campaign for third world debt relief.

Prof Webb is a committed Christian, married to a hospital chaplain, and is an opponent of abortion and stem cell research.
