Frank Doran

Labour MP
Aberdeen Central

Date of birth

13 April 1949

Political profile

Frank Doran achieved a singular, if unfortunate, result in 1992 when he became the only sitting Labour MP in the country to lose his seat (Aberdeen South) to the Conservatives.

He had been a controversial figure during his first term, establishing a reputation as a left-wing activist, with strong opposition to the poll tax and the Gulf War.

He was beset by political embarrassments from his career as a solicitor, having been fined for professional misconduct by the Scottish Law Society.

However, in his time in the political wilderness, he underwent a remarkable transformation and returned as an utterly loyal, somewhat meek Blairite moderniser.

His political metamorphosis was recognised with his appointment as PPS to Ian McCartney.

Although he lost that position after the election, he has continued to keep a low profile in the Commons.

He is the partner of Lewisham Deptford MP Joan Ruddock.
