Sex abuse Olympic coach jailed

A former Irish Olympic coach has been sentenced to two and a half years' jail for sexually assaulting a schoolgirl he was training.

Keith Francis Burns, 64, of Silverhill, Enniskillen, is serving a two year sentence for attacking another girl.

He was convicted in June of three counts of indecently assaulting the girl, who was aged between 13 and 15.

Judge Piers Grant told Burns he had betrayed his position of trust "for his own sordid sexual gratification".

Judge Grant told Omagh Crown Court, sitting in Ballymena, that Burns had targeted his vulnerable victim.

He said that had she shown more weakness, Burns would have exploited it in a further attempt to take his offending to a higher level.

Burns was banned from coaching, teaching or other supervisory work with girls under 18.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for life.
