Quigley suspect trial in Republic

The man charged with the murder of Jean Quigley in Londonderry in July has opted to stand trial in the Republic of Ireland.

Stephen Cahoon, 36, from Harvey Street in Derry, was asked where he wanted to be tried when he appeared in court in Castlerea, County Roscommon, on Friday.

He is accused of murdering the mother of four at her Cornshell Fields home.

Mr Cahoon was remanded in continuing custody to reappear at the same court later this month.

His solicitor said his client opted for trial south of the border but reserved his right to change his mind, which he can do at any time before his arraignment.

He also urged the authorities to deal with the case as soon as possible as it was unlikely his client would get bail in the Republic, and expressed concern about publicity surrounding the case to date.
