Girl released in murder inquiry

Emmett Shiels was shot dead in Creggan

A 16-year-old girl arrested in relation to the murder of Emmett Shiels in Londonderry has been released pending the preparation of reports.

Three male youths aged 16, 17 and 18 are still being questioned by police.

On Thursday, Nadine Kelly, 18, from Celandine Court in the Waterside, appeared in court charged with perverting the course of justice.

Mr Shiels, from Tyrconnell Street in the Bogside, was shot in the Bligh's Lane area at about 0045 BST on June 24.

Ms Kelly's solicitor told Londonderry magistrates court that she had no involvement in the murder and her involvement in the alleged alibi offence stemmed from a romantic attachment.

A PSNI officer told the court tensions were running high and the homes of other people arrested in connection with the murder have been attacked.

Emmett Shiels was driving a pizza delivery van when he was caught up in a confrontation with a group of masked gunmen.
