Safety call after crossing death

The family of a man who died when his tractor collided with a train at an unmanned rail crossing said they hoped safety would be improved.

The jury at the inquest found warning lights could have prevented the death of James Craig, 70, from Ballykelly.

Mr Craig's son Tom said he was hopeful that "putting in lights or any other safety measures would be a benefit."

A Translink spokesperson said "Safety is our top priority and we'll give the coroner's comments due consideration."

"At this time we extend our sympathies to James Craig's family."

Tom Craig said he found it comforting to think safety will be re-examined by NI Railways.

"I'm fairly optimistic they will heed the warnings.

"You can say a lot of things in hindsight but surely he would have seen lights if they were straight ahead flashing."

A safety review of the risk level at the crossing was carried out by Translink at the time of the accident.
