New baby found dead in woods

The police have appealed to the mother of a new born baby boy found dead in a wooded area in County Down to contact them.

The baby's body was discovered near Newtownards by a member of the public at about 2000 BST on Friday night.

The child's body was found off the Portaferry Road, close to Mount Stewart, in an area known locally as the Old Gasworks.

The police said they were concerned for the welfare of the baby's mother and appealed to her to seek medical help.

A post mortem examination was carried out on the baby's body.
