Funerals of officers take place

Funeral cortege

Police chiefs and political leaders have been attending the funerals of three of the four police officers killed in a crash at the weekend.

Their vehicle caught fire after crashing near Warrenpoint, County Down.

A service for James Magee, 27, was held in Dromore while Kevin Gorman, 24, was laid to rest in Drumaness.

The funeral of Kenneth Irvine, 30, was held in Kilkeel. The fourth victim, 39-year-old Declan Greene, will be buried in Massforth on Thursday.

Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde attended the funerals along with Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie.

Members of the Policing Board were also present.

At the funeral of Constable Magee in Dromore, Dean Stephen Lowry paid tribute to the officer: "His death has brought to an end many of the hopes that we had for him.

"But it has brought no shame, for he died on duty in the prime of life with everything to live for and the best record you could imagine."

Constable Gorman played for both the GAA and football team in Drumaness and members of both formed a guard of honour at his funeral.

During the service, a tribute was read out from his brother Shane, who said his brother "had crammed more into his 24 years than most people do in a lifetime".

The 24-year-old was buried in Ballynahinch.
