Police seeking wanted Eta man

Police in Northern Ireland have said they are looking for a convicted Eta killer wanted by a Spanish judge on charges of supporting terrorism.

Inaki de Juana Chaos, 53, is wanted on charges he praised or supported terrorism in a letter read at a rally.

His Belfast lawyer, Kevin Winters, said de Chaos would appear before a Belfast court on Monday.

However, the police have said they are in receipt of a European arrest warrant issued by the Spanish authorities.

He was released in August after being jailed in the 1980s over 25 murders.

Mr Winters said an arrest warrant has been sought by the judicial authorities in Madrid, but that as yet none had been issued by a court in Belfast.

"We will be in attendance together with our client on Monday, whether there is a warrant there or not," he said.

"Our position in attending court on Monday is consistent with our engagement in this case to date.

"We have been engaging in an open and transparent way with all the authorities, including the Madrid High Court, the court in Belfast, the police and the Crown Solicitors Office."

The case, similar to extradition proceedings, is to be heard at the Recorder's Court.

Interpol has been involved in efforts to locate him, and Mr de Juana Chaos is believed to have arrived in Ireland earlier this year.
