'Sad blow' as contractor jobs go

Building site

Thirty-five jobs have been lost at the Kilkeel-based contractor RG Coulter.

The County Down company has operated in the town for more than 40 years and was once the largest employer in the area with more than 300 staff.

South Down MLA Jim Wells paid tribute to owner Gordon Coulter and said it appeared the firm was a victim of the downturn in the construction industry.

"Gordon was a great employer. It's dreadful news and a very sad blow for the entire town," he said.
