Crime op results in 109 arrests

A summer crackdown on burglary and other crimes in Belfast has led to 109 arrests, police have revealed.

Running for the past two months, Operation Heartbreak is aimed at bringing more people before the courts.

Offences being targeted include burglary, car crime, possession of drugs and breach of bail conditions.

The police's latest move in the operation has been to publicly identify six burglary suspects and two men on the run from prison.

Assistant Chief Constable Duncan McCausland said it was a strategy that police would continue to review.

"This is the conclusion of the first phase of Operation Heartbreak, where we've arrested 109 people for burglary and car crime," he said.

"These eight individuals who we have named are individuals who we are seeking to help us in terms of the investigation into some of these offences."

Commenting on the overall operation, Assistant Chief Constable McCausland added: "I think it's a tactic, which is a genuine tactic, and a tactic which we can use due to the growing trust and confidence across the whole community in relation to policing."
