Firefighters come under attack

Fire crews have come under attack in two separate overnight incidents.

Firefighters were attacked by up to 40 youths in Fahan Street in Londonderry as they dealt with a car fire.

Stones and bottles were thrown in the incident shortly before 0200 BST. The crews were called out to the same car fire three times.

In Dungannon, a fire engine window was broken after a crew attending a wheelie bin on fire at Newell Road were attacked with stones at about 0100 BST.

Station Commander Davey Lawrence said his crews should not be put at risk.

"There's no logic to it. The firefighters in Dungannon are retained, they're part-time, they work in the town, they live in the town," he said.

"Some of them have businesses in the town and employ local people. They shouldn't have to serve the community under fear of being attacked."
