An 18-month-old Irish girl has drowned in a swimming pool in south-east Spain.

The toddler fell into the pool in the garden of a house in El Campello, a small resort a few miles north of Alicante.

Officers from the Civil Guard have said they are investigating the incident, which they described as a "tragic accident".

Authorities did not identify the family, but confirmed they come from Dublin and are resident in Spain.
