Anti-social repossessions double

Housing Executive repossessions in NI due to anti-social behaviour have almost doubled, it has emerged.

The housing body's community safety manager, Frank Mulhern, said a total of 33 properties had been repossessed in the last 12 months.

This compares to 17 in the previous 12-month period.

"This can be attributed to district offices responding speedily and effectively to reported anti-social behaviour," said Frank Mulhern.

Mr Mulhern said the Housing Executive only repossessed properties as a last resort and reports of antisocial behaviour were resolved without legal action in the vast majority of cases.

He added that in recent years, efforts had focused on early intervention and getting the source of the problem resolved.

"This can be achieved through a number of measures ranging from sending out warning letters to perpetrators of anti-social behaviour, offering mediation to the parties concerned or using Acceptable Behaviour Contracts," said Mr Mulhern.
