Man charged over postman attack

Parcel

A 46-year-old man has been charged in connection with the attempted robbery of a postman in the Gresham Street area of Belfast.

Two men approached the postman and tried to force him into the back of his van at about 100 BST on Saturday.

However, one of the men was wrestled to the ground by a passer-by and detained with the help of others. The other attacker made off into Millfield.

The man has also been charged with obstructing police.

An eye witness said the postman suffered a cut to his head in the attack.

"The postman was an elderly gentleman, I would say very much near retirement ," he said.

The man who made off is described as being about 6ft tall and was wearing an orange and blue waterproof jacket.

Police have appealed to any witnesses or anyone with any other information to contact them.
