Firefighters put out base blaze

Firefighters generic

Firefighters have dealt with a gorse fire at Ballykinlar army base in County Down.

At one stage more than 50 firefighters from 10 appliances tackled the blaze.

It is understood the blaze broke out at about lunchtime. Earlier, fire service group commander Don Mackay said the size of it could cause problems.

"It's a big area. It's over 1,000 metres by half a mile wide the fire front, so it is fairly extensive," he said.

"But we have got the capability to deal with it and we've got the personnel to deal with it and nobody's at any risk."
