Fire at former army homes in city

Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at former army houses in Londonderry's Waterside area.

Five appliances attended the scene in Clooney Park West, where a row of derelict properties were set on fire.

Trevor Ferguson, of the fire and rescue service, said it is not the first time the buildings have been targeted.

"My concern would be people are in the vicinity of these buildings and some, perhaps, inside them lighting and setting these fires," he said.

"The potential's here for people to be seriously injured or indeed lose their lives.

"These buildings are very unstable, the structure of them is no longer sound, we don't want our firefighters to come down here to come into these buildings and try to rescue people.

"So I'd ask people to stay well away from these buildings and also for parents to ensure that their children stay well away from these buildings."
