A 43-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a teenage girl in Sligo in 2006.

The remains of Melissa Mahon, 14, were found in Lough Gill in the town in February after information was given to the Gardai.

Ronald McManus, from Rathbraughan Park, Sligo, was remanded in custody after appearing before a special sitting of Sligo Court on Friday evening.

A crowd shouted abuse and threw eggs and stones as he was driven away.
