University offers £3K to students

The University of Ulster is planning to offer computing students £3,000 to study in Londonderry.

It believes the proposed move could help regenerate the economy of the city.

Students will be offered the incentive to take up courses at the Magee campus in Derry.

The proposal would cost £1.8m over five years and the university wants the city's ratepayers to contribute almost £400,000.

Provost of Magee Jim Allen said the north west needed more computing graduates.

"If we had scholarships that were awarded competitively to high quality students, we could attract them here, I believe," he said.

"And more importantly, we could retain them here in the city and regenerate the city."
