Digger accident is investigated

An investigation is under way at a recycling centre near Enniskillen after an accident in which a man in his 50s was seriously injured.

Ronnie Marshall was operating a digger at Drummee Waste Management Facility which is situated at an old quarry.

It is believed the ground gave way and the digger fell into a gully and became partially submerged in water.

The Health and Safety Executive is at the scene on the Derrygonnelly Road to try to establish exactly what happened.

The emergency services were called to the facility at about 1600 BST on Tuesday.

The fire and rescue service used ropes and pullys to hoist Mr Marshall from his cab.

He was then taken to the Erne Hospital with serious injuries.

The waste and recycling facility is owned and operated by Fermanagh District Council.

It has been open for two years and is used by people across the county.

Alex Baird, the chairman of Fermanagh District Council, issued a statement saying they were "devastated by this terrible accident".

The council said it would work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure that a full and proper investigation into what happened is carried out.

An investigation has also been launched by the police.
