'Internet used' to plan city riot

Police believe a riot in Londonderry involving up to 100 youths was organised on the internet.

Officers were attacked on Friday night after they tried to break up rival gangs on Academy Road in the cityside.

Two rival gangs turned on the police when they tried to calm the situation down. Officers were pelted with bottles and bricks, but there were no injuries.

Police say it began as a row between two individuals, but escalated when their friends got involved.

They believe it was orchestrated through social networking websites.

Later, four teenagers were arrested for public order offences as large crowds gathered in the Rosemount area. They were later released, pending further reports.
