Disused factory fire 'suspicious'

The building was destroyed in the blaze A fire which destroyed a building in the Loguestown Industrial Estate, Coleraine, is being treated as suspicious.

More than 50 firefighters battled high winds for four hours to tackle the blaze on Monday evening.

The building is expected to be demolished later. Group Commander Peter O'Reilly said his firefighters' safety was paramount.

"It was particularly dangerous in that it was unoccupied," he said.

"There have been a number of significant incidents across the UK and Ireland recently where firefighters have lost their lives or been put in danger. It is always foremost in our minds."

Initial concerns that the roof of the building may have contained asbestos proved false.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire and stop it spreading.
