Girls, nine and six, die in crash

Crash scene Two children have been killed in a car crash in County Longford.

A nine-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene while a six-year-old girl died later in hospital.

The two girls were not related, but were travelling in the car with their mothers on the outskirts of Edgeworthstown on Monday evening.

They were Ava Carberry, aged six, from Oranmore in County Galway, and Michella Logan, aged nine, from Kilcock in County Kildare.

An eight-year-old girl was badly injured and has undergone major surgery at a hospital in Mullingar. No other car was involved in the accident.

The vehicle had collided into an embankment on the Old Longford Road. Gardai have begun an investigation.
