Officer assaulted in disturbance

Police officers A police officer has been assaulted during trouble in the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast.

The disturbance broke out after two people were threatened by a man armed with a machete close to the Bullring area at about 2100 BST on Tuesday.

A short time later windows were smashed at a house in Whitecliffe Parade.

The officer was assaulted during follow-up searches in Clifton Crescent. One man has been in connection with the assault.

A second man was arrested for a number of offences including criminal damage, possessing a weapon and making threats to kill, while a third man was arrested for grievous bodily harm.

A number of items including a knife, firework and a car were recovered from the area for further examination.
