Violence 'arranged on internet'

Derry city A community worker from Londonderry has said young people are organising riots on the internet.

On Tuesday night, police vehicles were damaged by petrol bombs after officers were called to a disturbance in the Society Street and Fahan Street areas.

Dominic Bonner from Youth First in the Bogside area said he believes the Bebo site is being used to arrange violence. He said children as young as 11 have carried out attacks on the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall over recent nights.

"For young people to go out and attack others and arrange this conflict - a lot of this stuff has been organised on Bebo," Mr Bonner said.

"Events of the last few nights have been a follow-up from an incident which happened on Sunday in Irish Street where young people had arranged a football match on Bebo.

"Both groups of young people went to this football match with cars full of weapons prepared to have some sort of battle at the end of it."

Mr Bonner is the second worker in the city to speak out about the Bebo website being used to arrange disturbances.

Tuesday night's trouble started when a number of youths began throwing stones and petrol bombs close to Memorial Hall at about 1930 GMT.

No-one was injured and there were no reports of any arrests, police said.

The PSNI said officers liaised with community representatives throughout the evening.

The area returned to normal at about 2330 GMT, said the PSNI.
