Three remanded in custody over death

Trio appeared at Antrim magistrates court

Three men have appeared at Antrim magistrates court charged with the murder of Denver Smith in the town on New Year's day.

In the dock were Jerome Archibald, 23 and David Burns, 21, both from Ardnaglass Gardens in Antrim and Steven Guiney, 18, from Devon Close in the town.

A detective inspector told the court that when the charges were put to the men at Antrim RUC station on Monday they each replied "not guilty".

They were remanded in custody to appear again in court on Wednesday.

Denver Smith died on New Year's day

Mr Smith, 32, was attacked in the Stiles estate in Antrim just a few hours into the new millennium.

The RUC said that the police went to the scene after a call from a member of the public to say that a man was being beaten.

The man was admitted to hospital but died just a few minutes later. Mr Smith was the father of three children.

He was buried after a service at his home in Caulside park in Antrim on Tuesday.
