Hospital bedbugs cause staff move

Erne Hospital Doctors and nurses in a residential block of the Erne Hospital in Fermanagh have had to be moved due to an infestation of bedbugs.

Sperrin Lakeland Trust said they had been "temporarily relocated" to "facilitate a pest control programme".

Meanwhile, the trust has confirmed that 11 elderly patients who are carrying the MRSA infection are being nursed in a separate area of the hospital.

None of the patients is ill from the bug, the trust said.

They are being treated by their own nursing staff.

Sperrin Trust said that many people may carry MRSA for some time before it is detected.

"In many cases, particularly among the elderly population, MRSA is acquired in the community," the trust said.

"Patients who have a history of MRSA colonisation in the community and who need to be admitted to hospital are immediately identified and special arrangements put in place.

"Consistent with the management of MRSA, the patients identified as carriers are currently being nursed in their own area with their own designated nursing staff."

All of the patients are on the Care of the Elderly Ward 8 of the hospital.

The trust said it was continuing to monitor the situation and steps were being taken to minimise the risk from MRSA.

It said the residential block with the bedbug problem is in a separate building from the hospital and there was no risk to patients or visitors at the hospital.
