'Feud link' in teenager shooting

Shooting scene in Ballymurphy A gun attack on a teenager in west Belfast is linked to a feud in Ballymurphy, his family has said.

Wayne McComb, 17, was walking along the Whiterock Road at about 0800 GMT on Thursday when his family say two men tried to pull him into a car.

He managed to flee, but one of the men fired a shot, hitting him in the leg. His injury is not life threatening.

His mother, Mary, said he was targeted because he is friendly with one of the families involved in the feud.

"It was more serious than a so-called punishment attack - I think someone was out to take Wayne's life," she said.

Local people said it was "a miracle" no one else was injured in the shooting.

The victim's brother, Ned, said he saw the incident from a bedroom window.

"As soon as he got out of my sight I heard a loud bang and I thought he was dead," he said.

"Wayne would probably have been taken away and tortured and we would have found him dead a couple of weeks later.

"There is going to be someone else dead - there is more or less a bounty on our heads."

Sinn Fein West Belfast assembly member Michael Ferguson appealed for calm following the shooting.

"There has already been one death in recent weeks and a number of attacks. This community has suffered enough," he said.

SDLP West Belfast assembly member Alex Attwood said he condemned the incident.

"All those involved must step back and the PSNI must step up to the mark of identifying and prosecuting anyone involved in this conflict," he said.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to contact them.
