Mr Lindsay, 44, asked Ms Meen to marry him on Christmas Day at the Surrey home they share with his and Caron's sons, Charlie, 11 and Gabriel, nine.

"I've been planning it for quite a while because Sal is the person I want to spend the rest of my life with," he said.

Caron rose to stardom as a Blue Peter presenter, marrying Mr Lindsay in 1991.

She fought breast cancer with the help of both modern and complementary medicine, but news of her battle only came to public attention when she died.

Lindsay told the News of the World that Mrs Hunniford was pleased about his forthcoming wedding and "has only the boys' and my interests at heart".

Former GMTV weather girl Ms Meen, 40, met up with Lindsay after Keating's death, describing him as a "broken man".

She told the newspaper he was "so sad he couldn't function" but the couple fell in love over the following months.

Ms Meen said she "burst into tears" when Mr Lindsay proposed and pledged to make TV presenter and friend Anthea Turner her maid of honour.
