Two women die in road accidents

Two women have died after road accidents in counties Down and Antrim.

Gemma Elizabeth Montgomery, 18, from Ardmillan Gardens in Bangor was killed in a two car collision on the main Belfast to Bangor road at Ballyrobert at 2200 GMT on Friday.

Three other people were injured in the collision, one seriously.

Three hours earlier a 35-year-old woman was fatally injured in an accident in Cushendall.

Bernadette Graham of Middlepark Avenue in the village was in a car that hit a parked vehicle on High Street.

She was taken to a nearby house where she received first aid treatment before being taken by ambulance to Antrim Area Hospital, where she later died.

Striking firefighters were on the scene within minutes after they left picket lines to assist in moving the woman from her car.

Meanwhile, the citybound carriageway of the M1 motorway was closed at Sprucefield because of a serious accident shortly before 1300 GMT on Saturday.

Two lorries blocked both lanes of the carriageway. There were long tailbacks before the traffic was diverted off the motorway.
