Murdered journalist memorial unveiled

Trade unionists paid tribute to the Sunday World reporter, and murdered postal worker Daniel McColgan, at the annual May Day rally in Belfast on Saturday.

In front of an audience of trade unionists, Mr O'Hagan's widow Marie unveiled the plaque to her husband at Transport House in the city.

The journalist was shot dead by loyalists near his home in Lurgan last year.

Among those who came to pay tribute was John Barsby, the President of the National Union of Journalists.

"Journalists will not stop telling the truth," he said.

"There are still seven or eight journalists under threat from paramilitaries and everyone should have the opportunity to go out earn a living free of fear of these threats and we want the threats lifted."

Afterwards, NUJ members carrying pictures of Martin O'Hagan joined hundreds of other trade unionists on the May Day parade through the city, organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

At a rally at St George's market, tribute was also paid to murdered postal worker Daniel McColgan, who was killed at a north Belfast sorting office by the Ulster Defence Association.
