Photographer of the Year 2006: Round one

Voting has now finished in the first round of our annual photo competition on the theme of 'Shelter'.

The winner was Max Pickering (picture nine) who polled over 23% of the vote. The runner-up was Ilkka Niskanen (picture seven) on 17%, just ahead of Michelle Nold (picture 8) on 15%,

What happens next

So our congratulations go to Max and Ilkka whose pictures will go forward to the final when you will be able to decide who is awarded the title of BBC News website Photographer of the Year.

High standard

We had more than 3,500 entries for the first round and have already received many for subsequent themes.
