Elderly woman dies in house fire

An elderly woman died when a fire swept through her house in West Lavington, Wiltshire.

The 84-year-old victim, who lived alone, is thought to have been trying to start a fire in the living room grate when it got out of control.

Concerned neighbours called police to the detached two-storey property in Church Street on Monday afternoon.

Officers forced their way in and found the woman collapsed on the floor. She was declared dead at the scene.
