Drivers warned of freezing rain

Forecasters are warning that there is a serious risk of black ice on roads in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire overnight as rain, sleet and snow combine.

Temperatures are expected to fall sharply and the combination could lead to freezing rain.

The rain, which will turn to sleet and snow for a time, is expected across parts of Wiltshire and the Cotswolds in the early hours of Sunday.

Motorists are advised to be wary of black ice on untreated roads.

'Black ice'

BBC West's weatherman, Ian Fergusson, said: "As the rain moves east during the early hours of Sunday, it will readily turn to sleet and snow for a time before turning back to rain as milder air follows-on from the west.

"Snow could lie in some upland areas for a time, but our main concern is the risk of freezing rain.

"We're uncertain how great this risk might be in Wiltshire, but motorists should be very wary of black ice on untreated roads and lanes during the early hours of Sunday."
