Axe raider targets Halifax branch

Halifax in Salisbury

A robber brandishing an axe threatened staff at a building society branch in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Security guards at the Halifax on High Street managed to lock themselves behind the counter when the attacker hit the counter glass with the axe.

He escaped in a black Audi estate car which was driven onto the A36 towards Southampton via the ring road.

The robber is about 5ft 11in (1.8m) tall and was wearing a balaclava, according to Wiltshire Police.

It is not known if any cash was taken in the robbery.

A police spokesman said: "This was a frightening attack and I would like to appeal for any witnesses or anyone who has information on the vehicle described to contact Salisbury Police.

"Alternatively you may leave information anonymously on Crimestoppers 0800 555111."
