Prime Minister Gordon Brown has visited Swindon to calm business leaders and community groups' fears over the economic crisis.
Speaking at the town's Steam Museum he said that the situation would remain tough for some time to come.
"This morning I've been talking about heating bills and getting mortgages. We are doing what we can to help at this difficult time," he said.
Mr Brown then travelled to Cheltenham to open the Literature Festival.
