Crash death police in car appeal

Police investigating a crash in which a motorcyclist died are trying to trace a car which stopped at the scene.

Gary Lane, 23, was killed in a collision with a Smart car in Ermin Street, Swindon, last Thursday night.

A 28-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police said a witness saw a pink or red-coloured Volkswagen Polo, which had been following the Smart car, stop briefly after the crash.

"Once the collision had occurred, the driver of that VW Polo stopped at the scene, until blue emergency lights became visible and then the driver drove away without leaving any personal details," said a spokesman

"There is a strong possibility that the driver of the VW Polo may have seen something prior to the collision which may assist our investigation and we are asking for that person to contact us as soon as possible.

"It is believed that the driver was male and could well live in the vicinity of Stratton St Margaret."

Mr Lane's funeral will take place this Friday at St Mary's church in Pinehurst, Swindon.

His parents requested flowers only, but said an inline skating club memorial fund would be set up at a later date in tribute to their son who enjoyed the sport.
