DVD tackles domestic abuse issue

Domestic abuse

A film is being launched by Wiltshire Police to highlight the problems faced by people suffering domestic abuse.

"Leaving", commissioned by deputy chief constable Stephen Long, shows the traumatic story of a woman trying to leave an abusive relationship.

The film is said to be a "call to action" to employers, professionals and others to be conscious and aware when presented with signs of domestic abuse.

It was funded by councils, the police, Home Office and primary care trust.

Practical steps

The film will be delivered to organisations via a DVD and information pack, with details of supporting materials which will enable it to be used as a training resource.

In the last 20 years, 50 domestic murders have been investigated by Wiltshire Police.

In 2007/2008, Wiltshire Police attended 6,433 incidents of domestic abuse.

Estimates suggest that more than 16,000 children in Swindon and Wiltshire witness or experience domestic abuse in their home each year, police said.
