Police arrest purse thief in city

Police arrested a man shortly after he allegedly stolen a woman's purse in Castle Street, Salisbury.

Staff at a Tesco store saw the theft from the elderly woman and used a radio to call for help on Thursday in the Wiltshire city.

Police officers were in the area and were able to arrest the suspected thief fairly quickly, a Wiltshire Police spokesman said.

A 30-year-old man is due to appear in court later.

Constable Mark Welch said: "There have been ongoing problems with purse snatchers targeting the elderly.

"We appreciate the assistance of Tesco staff in the apprehension of this offender."
