Michael Pedder, 47, of Willis Way, Swindon, pleaded guilty to charges including manslaughter relating to the death of Brian Marsh, 69.
He had previously denied attacking his mother, Doreen Marsh, Bristol Crown Court heard.
Justice Robert Owen adjourned sentencing until the week commencing 7 April.
Mental problems
Mr Marsh's body was found after police were called to his home in Whittington Road, Swindon, on 14 May last year.
During Tuesday's brief plea hearing, Dr Caroline Bradley of the Royal College of Psychiatrists told the court Pedder suffered "complex" mental problems, including obsessive compulsive disorder.
She said he required "specific hospital care", adding: "My worry for Mr Pedder is that his difficulties are so complex that he would struggle in most hospital environments."
"It is a tragic case," Justice Owen told the hearing.
Pedder was remanded in custody at a psychiatric unit.
