The borough council said the creation of a Home Zone just off the Manchester Road would improve the quality of life for local residents.
Gladstone Street and Salisbury Street will get new paved areas, new street lighting, trees and landscaped features and better parking.
The improvements, which are part of the authority's Streets For Living project, will be completed in February 2008.
Community cohesion
Further traffic-calming features are being added within Ponting Street and Graham Street.
There will be road closures in the area while the work is being carried out.
The Streets For Living project, in partnership with Wiltshire Police, La Courneuve near Paris and Hilversum in Holland, aims to improve community cohesion and the environment of the area.
Councillor Peter Greenhalgh said: "This exciting project is already showing signs of success and the positive response from residents so far is extremely encouraging."
