Astrophysicist honoured by Queen

Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell A physicist from Wiltshire is made a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, from Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire, was appointed a Dame for services to science.

The renowned physicist is currently visiting Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford.

Ms Bell Burnell, who is also a CBE, is credited with discovering the first pulsar in 1967.

This is a rotating super-dense star that emits brilliant flashes of electromagnetic radiation at each revolution, like the flashes from a lighthouse.

Opera singer

Elsewhere in the county, Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Green, of Wilton, has been made a CBE.

He is in charge of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and was appointed for services to animal welfare.

John Thornton, of Bradford-on-Avon, was also made a CBE.

John Clarke, of Chippenham, was awarded an OBE for services to the gas industry and the same award was made to opera singer Rosalind Plowright, of Salisbury, for services to music.

Other people honoured by the Queen in Wiltshire include:

  • An OBE for Dr Monica Winstanley, of Cricklade, for series to science
  • An MBE for George Baker, of Devizes, for services to West Lavington Youth Club
  • An MBE for High Pilcher-Clayton, of Calne, for services to the administration of science
  • AN MBE for Chris Laurence, of Chippenham, for services to animal welfare
  • An MBE for Major Nigel Lewis, of Warminster, for services to the conservation of birds of prey
  • An MBE for John Smith, of Malmesbury, for service to the community of Sherston
  • An MBE for Helen Thorne, of Swindon, for services to the administration of science
  • An MBE for Michael Williams, of Trowbridge, for services to business
